Database Maintenance

Posted by ndnalibi at October 30. 2007

How often do you need to perform database mantenance and "packing". I'm told it's taking  4 hours per week, but that seems excessive for our site which is a low volumne site.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Bill

It is up to you, your server, RAM and hard drive space.

It is also up to how big it grows and how fast.

If you run a big site with lots of users doing lots of things (forums, publishing) your Data.fs will grow pretty rapidly and you should pack it every day or every few days.

A smaller site with lots of reads, will not grow very fast at all so do it when you want.

For us, we do it every few days, manually (because we have not been able to get a good cron working).

Thanks for the response. This site looks like it hasn't been updated since Jan of 2006. The site itself is small, mostly reads. It was set up before I  Started working here.

I'm thinking we are paying for for over-maintaning this site.
