Professional Plone Development Reviewed

Professional Plone Development by Martin Aspeli

There are a lot of Plone and Zope books out there on the market and most focus on the Plone 2.x platform as well as the day to day of setting up and working with Plone. Some go into how to develop content related sites, some go further into products and adapters. In Professional Plone Development Martin Aspeli goes much deep.

Into the Deep Plone

The first thing to say about this book is it is not for your average web developer or content manager. This book is for you full-fledged "Plone Guy" who both knows and understands Plone and a good amount of Python. Aspeli warms you up with a nice introduction and history of Plone but then hits you hard by getting down to the meat of it, developing in Plone.

Plone 3.0

Another interesting take of the book is the focus on Plone 3 which is relatively new to the game. While Plone 2 has been around for years, Plone 3 has some major changes that will both excite and scare the Plonistas out there. This book offers a good luck at some of the new framework and future direction of Plone and in that way is a great primer on what is to come.

Conclusion

While this book left us behind somewhere around page 122 we did really enjoy the examples and readability of the book. Aspeli doesn't pull his punches or dumb it down and it might take a few reads to get every last intricate detail but if you are looking for a view of the future and want to dive in, this is a great start.
